Escalators! Moving Stairs!
Do you like to go up and down the escalators in your local mall? Most kids answer, "Yes!" An escalator, is basically a set of stairs that move up and down so that you don't have to.
While escalators can be fun, they are extremely expensive to make. Did you know that escalators are probably the most expensive machine that you use regularly? It's true! Every single second of every single day at least one person is using an escalator. While your reading this, someone is going up and down these moving stairs. Even when your sleeping.
(In the picture above, this is a quad-escalator)
Do you ever wonder how escalators work? Or how they are made? It is actually very simple. It is just a rotating conveyor belt that move up and down and even goes under the machine so that it could start all over.
So who invented the escalator? Actually many people thought of this concept over time but never acted upon it. In 1859 Nathan Ames thought of the idea of "Revolving Stairs." Many other people tried to pursue this idea but never worked. Until, 1899 when George A. Wheeler finally made a working model.
